Trump Advances Tax Plan as Congress Navigates Funding Deadline
By Rachel Pick | 03/05/2025

President Trump is exerting significant influence over Congress, rallying Republicans behind his tax cut plan while Democrats struggle to counter his agenda. Unlike his first term, where Democrats mounted strong resistance, the President now benefits from a more compliant Congress willing to overlook legally questionable actions. His tax plan, which includes deep cuts to safety-net programs, faces Democratic opposition, but their efforts may ultimately serve as little more than campaign fodder for 2026. Meanwhile, Democrats have attempted to use the looming March 14 government funding deadline as leverage but remain reluctant to risk a shutdown. Republicans are pushing a stopgap funding bill through September 30, which moderate Senate Democrats may find difficult to oppose.
